结构：

With other audiences you mustn’t attempt to cut in with humor （主句）//as they will resent an outsider making disparaging remarks about their canteen or their chairman（as原因状语从句）.

译文：

而对于其他听众，你就不能试图贸然地讲这种幽默，因为他们也许不喜欢外人诋毁自己的食堂或老总。

翻译思路：理解中的上下文

我们把上一句话和这一句话对照起来看看：

If you are part of the group which you are addressing, you will be in a position to know the experiences and problems which are common to all of you and it’ll be appropriate for you to make a passing remark about the inedible canteen food or the chairman’s notorious bad taste in ties. With other audiences you mustn’t attempt to cut in with humor as they will resent an outsider making disparaging remarks about their canteen or their chairman.

大家应该注意到考研英语一阅读，两句话中，颜色相同的地方，基本上说的一回事情，要么意思相同，要么意思相反。这样就特别有助于我们理解，比如：

上一句：If you are part of the group which you are addressing,

下一句：With other audiences… an outsider

如果搞不懂上一句part of the group到底是什么意思，下文with other audience和an outsider就知道了。part of the group应该说的是“自己人”。

根据我说的理解策略，大家仔细辨析，下面这个译文那些地方有问题（答案在本页末）。

译文：如果你把自己置于听你演讲的人当中，你就会很自然的了解他们的经历与问题，而且对于食堂饭菜不佳和主管领带的糟糕品味的评论再恰当不过了。和其他观众在一起时，你不必试图用幽默的方式来打断他们，因为他们厌恶一个局外人对他们的食堂和总裁给予贬损的评论。

词汇：

scapegoat //n. 替罪羊

结构：

You will be on safer ground （主句）//if you stick to scapegoats like the Post Office or the telephone system（if条件状语从句）.

译文：

如果你想幽默，找个替罪羊调侃调侃，比如可以说说邮局或者电话局，这样就会更稳妥了。

翻译思路：替罪羊

设想，没有任何上下文，只有一个中文词“替罪羊”，请在这个词前加上合适的中文动词，结果会是什么呢？

一般会是：找个替罪羊，成为替罪羊。

那我们再来看看You will be on safer ground if you stick to scapegoats like the Post Office or the telephone system.这个句子中翻译的几个难点问题。

首先，be on safer ground一般不会翻译错。这里的ground相当于situation，意思是“会更安全点，会更稳妥一点”。这个短语，是承接前面的With other audiences you mustn’t attempt to（和其他听众谈话，你绝不能…）以及更前面的it’ll be appropriate to（比较合适的是…）而言。

其次，stick to常见的意思是“坚持做…”，但是这里考虑到下文的scapegoat是幽默中讨论的一个话题，我们一般中文不说“坚持一个话题”，中文可以使“只讨论某一个话题，只说某一个话题”。

再来说scapegoat考研英语一阅读，“替罪羊”。因为上文提到“如果和其他听众谈话，你外人考研英语一阅读考研英语一阅读，你就不能随意评价别人的食堂，别人的领导”。那要幽默怎么办？找个替罪羊呗，谁？下文正好有了like the Post Office or the telephone system，因为取笑这些话题，没有人会觉得受伤害。

理解到了上述三点，我们再来翻译就比较简单了：

如果你想幽默，找个替罪羊调侃调侃，比如可以说说邮局或者电话局，这样就会更稳妥了。
