结构：

That the antismoking lobby was out to destroy our way of life（That…同样，承前省略）//and the government should stay out of the way?（and连接的并列句）

译文：

他们坚持认为，向政府游说禁烟的人群试图毁掉我们的生活，政府就不应该干预此事。

翻译思路：小词out

都知道，学习英语，小词最难考研阅读理解，做翻译更是如此，这个句子有两个out。我看了看，目前市面上大多数参考译 没有翻译得特别准确，或者根本没有把这层意思翻译出来。

第一个the antismoking lobby wasout todestroy our way of life中be out to do something，我们看看柯林斯词典的解释Ifsomeoneisoutto do something, theyintend to doit.。够清晰吧，这就是柯林斯词典的妙处。

第二个the government should stayout of the way中out of the way基本上已经成为习惯用法了。它也有很多意思，常用的意思是in a remote location，即“远离”，还有“偏僻”的意思。这里的意思，是not interfering。

哦，最后再说说，这种词怎么办？特别简单，以后遇到一个，仔细查阅一个。比如，今天正好时间充足考研阅读理解，碰到了out这个小词，我们可以仔细查查词典，把out的所有意思都看看，所有词组都试图记一下，还有所有例句都看一遍。下次如果碰到了考研阅读理解，就或许会想起。即使忘记了，再稍微查一下，哦，恍然大悟。对的，上次查过。从此记得了。同理，以后碰到另外的小词，比如get考研阅读理解，有空，深入查查，学习学习。

nonsense //n.胡说，假话，愚蠢的话，荒谬的话

结构：

Lots of Americans bought that nonsense（第一个并列句）, //and over three decades, some 10 million smokers went to early graves（第二个并列句）.

译文：

他们这些胡话，竟然有许多美国人相信。结果三十多年来，大约有一千万烟民早早就进了坟墓。
